Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) by Mudiwa Pettus

Updated: Feb 28, 2023

Some of My Favorite CCCC 2023 Moments that Ain’t Got Nothing to Do with the Formal Program

1.) When members of the Black Caucus discussed the tonal semantics of Black people’s pronunciation of the word “liquor” after a kind waiter couldn’t quite understand our request to put our food and wine on separate checks.

2.) When Earl invited me, Brandon, and Drew (who’s a vegetarian, by the way) to Michael Jordan’s Steak House, and I learned that MJ’s house bread outranks Red Lobster’s biscuits (MJ’s is toasted ciabatta drizzled with fondue!)

3.) When Laura Gonzales graciously catered an impromptu hangout of scholars of color one night, and we talked and laughed so much in the hotel lobby that we didn’t go to our rooms until after 2:00 a.m.

4.) When I squatted effortlessly to grab a nacho from one of the plates Laura provided and popped right back up with no pain and realized that my physical therapy for my knees is actually working.

5.) When Earl, Brandon, and I talked about how [name redacted] seemingly got their comeuppance for their atrocious behavior (As the great comedian and social theorist Mo’Nique noted, “See, when you do clownery, the clown comes back to bite.”)

6.) When, by happenstance, I learned that I had been African-passing in a hilarious conversation with Suban and Sherita, and I reflected on all the wonderful moments of connection that my name has brought me (Thanks, Dad!)

Least Favorite Moment of CCCC 2023 that Ain’t Got Nothing to With the Formal Program:

When my returning flight from O’Hare to LaGuardia was delayed by 5 hours **Sigh**
